Summary of Play: "The Cherry Orchard" (1904) was the final play by Russian author and playwright Anton Chekhov. Although it is often played as serious tragedy, Chekhov insisted the play is a comedy - as much about new beginnings as it is about the passing of an aristocratic way of life. The story revolves around the return of Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya to her Russian estate, which is being put up for auction to pay the family's debts. Lopakhin, the son of a serf and now a wealthy merchant, urges the family to cut down the cherry orchard and divide the estate into cottage lots.
